As a young boy growing up in Massachusetts, I spent a lot of time in my father’s workshop. This led to a lifetime passion of woodworking. While I renovated antique homes and built custom furniture over the years, the interest in making handmade flutes began about 20 years ago.
At that time, I was fortunate to learn from a traditional flute maker who not only taught me the craft of flute making by using only hand tools, but also helped me develop a relationship with the instrument as a powerful means of expression and connection.
After making that very first flute 20 years ago, I continued to work in my workshop for the next few years developing my own style and approach, also by using only hand tools. As an experienced woodworker, I eventually started using some other shop tools I am familiar with, such as the lathe and router. Today, I use a combination of both types of tools.
Over the years, I have also wanted to share the beauty and gifts of the flute by playing them for others. I’ve played at elementary schools to universities, historical societies, senior centers, weddings, places of worship, and life celebrations. I have played in many outdoor settings across the country, but it is in the mountains and forests where I feel most at home.
My hope is for the songs to resonate with what each person needs at that time. Thoughts and intentions are joined together to create songs that celebrate life’s gifts.
Note: My flutes are not “Native American Made” as defined by the Federal Government or the Indian Arts and Crafts Act.
